2009 Ripken Triple A League Champion Cubs
On Saturday, June 27, the Cubs clinched the 2009 Triple A Championship game with a thrilling 9-8 win over the Pirates at Simonds Park in game two of the championship night. After being outplayed in a game one blowout loss, the Cubs battled back to win game two.
With the support and encouragement of both team's family and friends in the stands, Simonds Park felt like Fenway Park, making game two an instant classic.
The 2009 AAA Championship was definitely a most thrilling and exciting tournament! With the Pirates losing their first game in the tournament, they needed to go undefeated the rest of the way in order to capture the championship. They fought their way through three hard won battles against the Red Sox, Spinners and Cardinals to make it to the Championship game, where they met the tournament’s only undefeated team, the Cubs. Needing to win two games over the Cubs, the Pirates were able to take the first one, forcing a deciding second game. The Cubs proved up to the task, and with the tying run on third and the winning run on second, were able to hold off the Pirates in the bottom of the 6th to preserve a 9-8 victory and the AAA Championship. Congratulations to all the AAA teams for a fantastic season, especially to the league champion Cubs and the runner-up Pirates!
